Thanksgiving Day is an American holiday. It comes on the fourth Thursday of every November. American families gather① together on this day and celebrate their harvest②.
In September of 1620, 102 English people left England on a boat called "the Mayflower". After 65 hard days on the sea, they got to Plymouth on a cold November day. They settled③ there.
The American Indians were very kind to them. They taught them how to plant crops and how to fish. With the Indians' great help, they had a good harvest in the year 1621.
To thank God for the great harvest, they decided to have a holiday. The Indians were glad to be invited and joined them. That was the first Thanksgiving dinner.
Today, most American families still gather around big dinner tables on that day. The most popular food on the table is roast turkey④ and pumpkin pie⑤. Of course you can also find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. Sometimes people also play games after the Thanksgiving dinner.
